Flowers for Dreams sprouted in 2012, but was really seeded in 2010 as a side hustle to help me pay for college. I was 19 years old selling surplus flowers on little street carts outside our old high school graduation. Bouquets I bought for a few bucks on credit, sold for $20 to parents, and donated the difference. That difference became over 15,000 backpacks to over 40 different grades of Chicago Public Schools students by the time I graduated. Our first case study in profit & purpose working together.
By 2012, Jo & I committed fully — moving to downtown Chicago, launching flower delivery on bicycles, later a wedding division, and growing the business across 3 states in the Midwest. From the first sale, we committed 1/4 of our net profits to the causes we love. We became the first ever florist to certify as a B Corporation, one of Yelp's Top 100 local businesses in America, started our own nonprofit foundation and donated to 250 local charities — all from the sale of flowers.
Today, Flowers for Dreams is ushering in a craft flower movement. Leading with local, we design & deliver thoughtful artisan arrangements that help make a difference in our community. Our next stop: $2 million in lifetime donations to the most essential causes of our time.
